The leader of the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, has vehemently rejected Thursday’s election outcome describing it as “bogus” and “fraudulent”. The election results gave Jammeh at least 72% of an over 80% voter turnout. Darboe pulled 17% while Independent candidate finished with only 11%. In a scanty preliminary statement, the UDP which is also in alliance with the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC) said the results “…constitute a capricious usurpation of the will of the people.”

“The United Alliance urges Gambian citizens not to be hoodwinked by the results of such a conspicuously flawed process and further urges the international community not to validate the results of this preposterous fabrication. The United Alliance shall respond to these unacceptable results with appropriate action. The so-called United Alliance’s presidential candidate Mr. Ousainou Darboe refused to take questions from the press. Meanwhile, President Jammeh’s supporters are celebrating what they called a landslide victory. “The Gambian people have spoken”, chanted an APRC militant group who were on their way to Banjul for overnight celebrations. On the eve of the November 24th Presidential Elections, ECOWAS issued a damming statement in which it stated that the Gambia does not have an environment for the conduct of ‘free, fair and transparent presidential polls’.
